I’m so glad you’ve found your way to my website. You probably landed here for the same reason that I created the ‘About Your Elevator Pitch’ workbook and webinars… frustration!
Frustration that composing something as seemingly simple as a 30-second elevator pitch could be such an unsatisfying experience. Whether I was tweaking an existing elevator pitch or attempting to write a new one, it always felt like I was reinventing the wheel.
Let me digress and give you a little bit of background on my networking journey. I’m an entrepreneur, so I’ve been creating my own businesses for a very long time. My first one was when I was 10 years old – I learned how to make gorgeous tissue-paper flowers in a summer-school class. I came home and asked my mom to take me to the store to buy some brightly-colored tissue paper, which she did. I made a bunch of flowers out of that paper, and then stood out on the corner near my house and sold them all.
In my professional life, I’ve created a number of successful businesses over the past 30 years, and all of them required networking to help them grow. And yet, I think it’s easier to start a business than to come up with a good elevator pitch!!
All told, I’ve attended well over a thousand chamber of commerce meetings and networking events, as well as weekly and monthly B2B networking-group meetings. I’ve also moderated a monthly professional B2B networking meeting since 2013, and guest hosted at numerous others. Can you imagine me going to all of those meetings and never once being content with my elevator pitch? Maybe you feel the same way.
In trying to put my finger on what the problem was, I think it’s safe to say that I was looking for was something that could make the writing process more predictable. Sure, there are lots of people out there telling you what they feel you should include in your elevator pitch, but categories are not the same thing as content. I wanted a system to create content! Something as easy as paint-by-numbers, but for for words.
I finally realized that if I wanted something that organized and that intuitive, I was going to have to create it myself.
This was not a short journey. I came up with the idea (or at least the URL) in 2016. It then took four years before the structure for that system began to crystalize in my mind.
That being said, another two years would pass before I had a finished product that I felt I could share with the world. But it was well worth the wait. I can say with confidence that if people follow the steps I've laid out they will end up with a well-organized, to-the-point elevator pitch that includes all the necessary components, flows well, and comes in at the 30-second mark. And the process is simple, simple, simple.
